Four Words I Never Want to Say to Jesus

By Toni Babcock

Since becoming a follower of Christ I have become increasingly convinced that without Jesus, I can do nothing (John 15:5 KJV). In fact, I would be a fool to want to do anything without Christ. It is a principle that controls the way I think about repentance, faith and the gospel, and how I live out my Christianity.

To acknowledge God – his goodness, his grace, his kindness, and his gospel through Christ, and to respond in faith, is how God has poured light into my soul and set me free. If I had not acknowledged God and His gifts through Christ, I would have no hope. I would be unbelieving and stuck in impenitence.

The conviction that God demands the obedience of faith leads me to believe that devoid of faith, people are really stuck in an impossible place. The Bible says without faith it is impossible to please God, (Hebrews 11:6 KJV). People do not surrender themselves or their sin to a God whose goodness and power they refuse to believe in or acknowledge.

The Bible says it’s the goodness of God that leads men to repentance (Romans 2:4 KJV), that Christ died for the ungodly (Romans 5:6 KJV), that when we were yet sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8 KJV). That when we were enemies, God was reconciled to us through the death of His Son so that salvation could be received through His life (Romans 5:10). Nothing we do cann add to God’s unmerited favor showed to us in the cross.

I ran across an interesting passage in the book of Jeremiah. The prophet is warning an unbelieving and backslidden people of God’s judgment unless they repent. “And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart,” (Jeremiah 18:11-12 KJV).

What?? I can almost hear the voice of the LORD God booming through the stony chambers of their hearts. “What are you saying, ‘there is no hope’?? No hope in the LORD who made you His peculiar treasure? No desire to make the Lord God Almighty yours? No desire to live by faith and let go of your unbelieving sins? What are these words, ‘there is no hope?'”

Where there is no hope there is no faith. No wonder these sinners refused to repent. These are four words I never want to say to the One who went to the cross to redeem my soul.
