Light and Darkness Divided

By Donny Wright

When darkness is mentioned in the Bible, it usually has a connotation of negativity, evil, gloom and doom. When light is mentioned in the Bible, it usually has a connotation of hope, righteousness, good and godly. We don’t have to read very far in the Bible to find an occurrence of darkness and light.

In Genesis 1:2, it says, “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” And the next verse says, ” And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” In the next verse, the writer says that God saw that the light was good.

That bit of information does not need to go unnoticed. God saw that the light was good. He doesn’t say anything about the darkness, only that the light was good. Then God separated the light from the darkness.

God did this on the very first day of creation and the principle still applies for us today. He separates us from darkness by providing Jesus, the Light. Jesus’ message was one filled with light to illuminate our outer world and our inner world. When Jesus enters our heart, we are filled with the Light. The Light overcomes our darkness and our sins are separated from us just as God separated light from darkness. In God’s eyes we become as pure Light and love.

However, just as there is a struggle between God and Satan, there is a struggle between Light and darkness. The darkness continually seeks a gap in our light, an opportunity to penetrate and allow the darkness to develop in our lives. We can be happy and full of joy with the Light in our lives and suddenly we are tempted to do things the way we did before the light and darkness were separated in our lives. We all know that the Power of Darkness is very clever and will try to penetrate us in our weakest point to make us powerless.

The illusion is our opinion of the power that Satan has over us. Remember, God separated light from darkness on day one and He has not changed that dynamic. It has only changed in our minds, our thoughts, our inner world. However Light is more powerful than darkness. If you don’t believe me, think upon this phenomena: go into a dark room with absolutely no light…total darkness. And then strike a match and see light overcome darkness. Just think that the match head, about the size of a mustard seed, can over come a room 10,000 times its size! Did you catch the reference to our faith the size of a mustard seed that can move mountains?

God in His infinite wisdom created opposites. Male and female, day and night, good and bad. And He also created two types of will: self will and God’s will. When we follow His example we can separate good from bad, light from darkness. On the opposite side, when we allow things to separate us from God, we will suffer the consequences. If we follow self will without consulting God’s will, we will usually suffer the consequences.

John 1:4-5 says, “in him [Jesus] was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” When we have Jesus in our heart we not only have the light but we also have the life. The life that is living, not dying. The life that is good. The life that separates us from the pain and suffering of darkness. The life that is eternal bliss. Full of love and light.

Today Lord I pray for awareness of light and love in my life you have given me. You have taken away the darkness and have given me the power to overcome. Thank you so much. I love you. Amen.
