The Last Hours of Christ’s Life Teaches Us Much about Ourselves

By Bob Butler

As we walk with Him in the last twenty-four hours of His life we see five attributes that we need to learn. The first one is humility. Jesus, the King OF Kings, took off His outer garment and began to wash the disciple’s feet. This is a picture that we need to study and learn. If we humble ourselves he won’t have to humble us. I once told this to a pastor and he said that we should not pray for humility because God will answer that one. I explained that God only humbles those who refuse to humble themselves. God will never humiliate a person, but He will humble one that gets too proud.

The second thing that happens is Jesus goes to the garden to pray. It is here that the flesh and the divine struggle for control. I know that does not sit well with many but the fact remains that Jesus knew what was going to happen and still He prayed “if it be possible let this cup pass from me”. Jesus went through ‘brokenness’ just as we have to. When we can say like Him, ‘not my will but thy will be done’, we will know Him in a closer way. The Psalmist said it this way “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise” Psalms 51:17 (KJV). Again, we have to pray for a broken spirit and broken heart or God will brake us. He loves us and wants the best for us. Jesus knows what it takes to live for Him in this world to day.

The third event that teaches us another lesson is the stripes that Jesus took for us. He was willing to suffer so we would not have to. We need to be willing to suffer for others if we truly want to be like Him. Unless you are willing to suffer for another you will always be thinking only of yourselves. Jesus knew what was before Him and yet for your sake He endured the pain and suffering. When they were done He was unrecognizable. He was beaten, He was bloody, and he was near death, yet He accepted it all for you. There is another reason that we will look at next that makes this important to us today.

The fourth attribute that He shows us is His Love. Will He was on the cross, after the suffering He already went through, He looked at them and in love said, “forgive them Father”. We need to love as Christ loved. The love that looks at the unlovable and says I forgive you. This love comes not form us but from God. A love that over looks the faults of the people around us and looks at their need. A love like that needs to be willing to suffer so the other can receive, a love that needs to be of a broken heart so that the other is put first. A love that comes from a humble heart so that they know it is for real. As we discover, love needs humility, and brokenness, and a willingness to suffer, to be called real love. But that is not all that Jesus showed us.

Even though He was dead and buried He still spoke with authority and moved the stone with His voice. Jesus spoke with authority and if we posses the other four attributes of Christ we to can speak with authority. This is what it is all about, humility, brokenness, willing to suffer for others, love, and speaking with authority. The attributes of Christ can be summed up in those five characteristics and we need them all today to face what is ahead. Remember God does not need to humble a person on their knees, He does not need to bring a brokenness to some one already of a broken heart, so pray for these and be conformed into His image.
