The Time Is Now

By Vincent Silmon

The Dallas Mavericks amazing NBA championship run was an exciting experience for the team and fans. While reflecting on this epic achievement, I couldn’t help thinking about the thousands of Maverick fans at each home game wearing t-shirts with the slogan, “The Time is Now”. For the Dallas Mavericks this rallying cry represented the completion of hard work, adversity, financial commitment, criticism and the investment made through the years to set the stage for this once in a lifetime opportunity. In our own personal lives, I believe this slogan should have meaning as we experience epic moments when we can declare, “The Time Is Now”. In the book of Ecclesiastes Solomon writes that there is a time and season for everything in life. If we believe this to be true, then we have to live in constant preparation for these moments. It’s amazing how God created each of us for a specific purpose, task and mission in life that only we can accomplish. How else can we explain President Obama’s historic rise to office, Oprah Winfrey’s assent to arguably the most influential women in American history and even Dirk Nowitzki emergence as the greatest European born player in the NBA? For these individuals, it simply was their time! To help us understand this concept more clearly I want to use the biblical prophet Jeremiah to show the ways our time can be now.

“The Time Is Now” To Step Up & Stand Out

In Jeremiah 1:5 God says, “Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you”

Just like Jeremiah, God has called each of us to do something extraordinary in our lives. However, we have to choose to embrace the calling, to step up and take advantage of the opportunities presented. I heard a story once about a young man probably in his thirties who was extremely talented, smart and had so much potential. Everyone that knew him was positive that he would achieve greatness beyond measure. However, when presented with opportunity after opportunity he never seemed to seize them because he did not see in himself what others saw in him. One day this young man unexpectedly died of a rare illness. Of course everyone was devastated by his death and saddened by this great loss. When visiting his grave the epitaph on his tombstone said, “Here lies potential”. The message of this story is simple and clear, unused potential will eventually die. We must seize the opportunities presented, and grab firmly to God’s plan for our lives.

“The Time Is Now” To Get Out of the Box

Jeremiah 1:6 says, ” I can’t speak for you! I’m too young”. Just like Jeremiah, God calls us to do something, but we box ourselves in by listing our limitations, our failures and our shortcomings. Seizing the opportunity and living in the moment requires us to step outside of our comfort zones. It is true that when we are outside of the box we expose ourselves to possible ridicule, failure and rejection. We can only experience the fulfillment of our destiny when we live outside of the box. God wants us to live free and limitless lives through him. Boxes only contain our pains, weaknesses, failures, insecurities and mistakes. Their purpose is to keep us from believing in God’s plans for us, threatening to keep our dreams small and make us doubt the good things others say about us. In the end we must give our boxes to God and let him destroy them with His love.

“The Time Is Now” to Maximize Our Resources!

Jeremiah 1:9-10 says, “Then the Lord touched my mouth and said, see I have put my words in your mouth…” Just like Jeremiah, God will give us what we need to get the job done. Everything we need to achieve the plan for our lives has already been instilled in us. It is our responsibility to take those things, grow them and put them into action. When Dirk Nowitzki came into the NBA he had raw talent, but he needed a lot of work. He worked tirelessly to improve every aspect of his game. Over time, he could have easily decided that he was good enough and stopped working, but he didn’t. Late at night while his teammates slept Dirk was shooting jump shots and free throws. Did he do all that work so he could become an All Star player, and league MVP? Not necessarily. Those were good achievements, but he was really preparing himself for the opportunity to seize the moment and say, “The Time is Now” to become a champion.

God has already made arrangements for our success. The actualization of His plans for our lives comes when we choose to embrace them, tap into our resources and seize the moment. “The Time is Now” to fulfill our destiny, becoming everything God wants us to be and receive the blessings awaiting us along the journey.
